Programme
Arrived at 7:10 am to find there were already early delegates. We then had full english breakfast at the Company canteen with discussions amongst chamber members. The programme included Talk in the Conference room 8-9am, and an extensive tour of the Refinery (9-10:30am) which finished at the Education Resource Centre.

Newham CEOThe Keynote speaker was Kim Bromley-Derry, Chief Executive of Newham Council who detailed the borough’s changing demography and future plans.

Newham Business Awards
Announcement of the Council’s sponsorship for Newham Chamber’s “Business Awards Dinner” to be held on 13th October at the Old Town Hall, 29 Broadway, Stratford, E15 4BQ.

Changing Environment of Brexit
Council to work together with Local Councils to discuss Brexit issues with the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan; includes discussion on “London Visa” to reduce impact of Immigration rules.
Also need to meet with Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Sajid Javid on Finance and Inflation issues that could affect Public sector borrowing.

Challenges for the Council with Funding & Budget issues especially the School System
Right to Buy policy is negatively affecting Housing Supply and Prices.

Borough’s changing demography

Demographics affecting Housing supply and education policy.
Rankings: 2010 – 2nd most deprived borough but improved in 2016 – 25th from bottom.
Current population of 332,583 in 2014 projected to be 400,000 by 2030. Currently about 40% under 25 years age.

Tour of the refinery.
Cane Sugar RefiningAttendees were Fully kitted with protective gear and taken on a tour of the Refinery, which included raw materials (holding) bay, ship docking area, process & control room, finishing area which finished at the Education Resource Centre.
